| What are your memories of Longridge Gala Day?
Here is a report of the very first one held in 1909."First Annual Sports in Longridge" (From Courier Newspaper)Longridge Forest Football Club have organised and successfully carried through a "sports day" in Longridge, which they anticipate will become one of the established events of the village. The committee entrusted with the the arrangements were:-Messrs J.Kinniburgh, A.Sharp, S.McMeeken and R.Weir. These gentlemen worked assidusously and aided by the other member of the club, they presented their programme in the Bent field on Saturday last. There was a good attendance and everything went merrily. Time was lost towards the beginning, however, and thid did not admit of some minor items being gone through. Altogether the sports were highly successful and the committee deserve congratulations on such a fine start being made, which they hope will help to make this event an annual one. The chief events were:- Five-a-side football competitions (15 entries)- Two Fauldhouse teams reached the final-1. "Death or Glory five"; 2. Fauldhouse West End. the prizes were gold badged for firsts and silver for seconds. Quoiting handicap (18 entries) - 1. D.Weir, jun (£1.10s); 2. S.Grierson (15s); 3. W.Cairns (7s 6d). Mr J. Kinniburgh was handicapper. Judgement Kick (83 trials)- 1. Geo. Quipp (silver badge with double gold centre); 2. T.Brown (silver badge). 120 Yard race handicap (2 heats) Winner of 1st heat - 1. J. Wallace, Whitburn; 2. J. Hamilton. 2nd Heat- 1. Forsyth, Fauldhouse; 2.Kerr Armadale Final - 1. Forsyth (set of knives and forks); 2. Hamilton (briar pipe). Whitburn Silver band was in attendance and kindly gave selections at intervals. Mr S.McMeekin was referee of the football |
