Longridge School Gutted by Fire

"The quick thinking of a primary school teacher was praised on Tuesday after she led 34 young pupils to safety from their burning school.  Mrs Catherine Shanks, infant mistress at Longridge Primary School, ushered the children out of the two-class school just after lunch as the roof erupted in a mass of flames.

Assisted by Mrs Seoniad Stewart, the school's only other teacher; she took a roll call of the Primary 1 and Primary II pupils as the 113 year old school burned fiercely.  The chidlren were then sent home for and unexpected half-day"
